Smart metering adoption in India – Now, Next and Beyond

Indian Power Sector is grappling with the challenge of high Aggregate Technical & Commercial (AT&C) losses which has significant impact on the Financial soundness of utilities. Smart metering technology will help to reduce the AT&C losses by minimizing human intervention and real-time data gathering in metering, billing and collection. India has a vision of replacing 250mn conventional energy meters in the country with smart meters. Further, COVID-19 has reinforced the importance of smart meter deployment in India considering the perceived benefits during the lockdown period, i.e. improvement in billing efficiency, collection efficiency, load management, and remote connection/disconnection services. Some distribution utilities could leverage smart metering for proper billing and collection.  Hence, smart metering will be most imminent and significant outcome of COVID-19. This smart metering transformation will enable the Indian utilities to react to the change, harness the present and chart the future while providing a foundation to smart grid and smart cities.
