Smart metering technology will help to reduce the AT&C losses by minimizing human intervention and real-time data gathering in metering, billing and collection. India has a vision of replacing 250mn conventional energy meters in the country with smart meters. Further, COVID-19 has reinforced the importance of smart meter deployment in India considering the perceived benefits during the lockdown period, i.e. improvement in billing efficiency, collection efficiency, load management, and remote connection/disconnection services.
